DTS
DTS ( Digital Theater Systems) is a digital surround sound system offering 5.1 channels of sound. Its has a greater encoding rate at 1,53600 bits per second than Dolby Digital which encodes at a rate of 384,000 or 448,000 bits per second. In other words, data is compressed to one-eighth the space for DTS while Dolby Digital compresses data to one-fifteenth of its original space. However, Dolby digital can be modified to less compression for greater audio quality and likewise DTS can increase compression for greater storage efficiency. Movies currently using DTS format therefore has less space for other supplementary features. It costs nothing to manufacturers to include DTS decoding simply because of the availability of the integrated circuit for Dolby Digital. This also means you will find either systems with Dolby Digital only or Dolby Digital with DTS but never just hardware containing only DTS. There are a few thousands of DVD with Dolby Digital whereas there are only one to two hundred DVD with DTS. Another point to note is that DTS uses a mix containing more bass and louder sound channels which may lead people to think it is better than Dolby Digital which may not necessarily be true. |
